Celebrate Earth Day with City Wide Clean-Up, Community Garden, and Plant Sale

West Columbia, SC (April 13, 2017 at 4:17 PM) — The City of West Columbia is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, 2017, between 9AM and 12PM, with a city wide clean-up in partnership with the Great American Clean-Up of South Carolina, a Palmetto Pride – Community Pride Grant community garden installation, and a West Columbia Beautification Foundation Plant Sale.

Volunteers are encouraged to come to City Hall, at 200 N. 12th Street, West Columbia, to pick up gloves, safety vests, and trash bags and head to the community space of choice. A shred truck will be onsite. The following will be collected in the City Hall parking lot: tires (limited to 4 per household), batteries, used cooking oil, electronics, computers, monitors, printers, laptops, microwaves, radios, phones, game systems, DVDs, TVs, and paint cans (filled with kitty litter, sand or dirt).

The groundbreaking for the first City of West Columbia Community Garden will take place behind City Hall. Seeds and plants will be provided. The garden is free and open to the public to plant, tend, and harvest. Director of Grants and Special Programs Tara Greenwood said, “The Community Garden Project is a new project being undertaken by the City of West Columbia. We look forward to starting this worthwhile project with the assistance of the Palmetto Pride – Community Pride Grant”.

The West Columbia Beautification Foundation is having a plant sale in the City Hall parking lot between 9 AM and 12 PM. Floral hanging baskets of geraniums, petunias, and other annuals will be available for purchase as well as flats of snap dragons, petunias, marigolds, and more. The Beautification Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and all purchases are tax deductible.
