The City of West Columbia Informs Neighboring Residents About Annexation Options
The City of West Columbia will be mailing a guide to residents, businesses, and property owners within the Town of Springdale’s proposed North Annex. Residents will have an opportunity to vote in an election on April 14, 2015 to determine if the area will be annexed into Springdale. The City of West Columbia is asking voters to vote “No.” West Columbia has identified the Augusta Road corridor and surrounding residential properties as important areas for the economic development of the city. To underscore that fact, West Columbia is willing to advance the benefit of lower water rates to its water customers in the proposed annexation area. The city will offer this lower rate for up to two years in order for West Columbia to prepare a future vote on annexing into West Columbia. Extending lower rates is only possible, however, if the majority votes NO to annexing into Springdale, which preserves the opportunity for West Columbia to expand along the Augusta Road corridor. West Columbia is informing voters that West Columbia residents and businesses have access to the city’s first class fire and police protection, animal services, and code enforcement. Water customers inside West Columbia’s city limits also have a 50% lower water rate than water customers in Springdale and unincorporated areas, and West Columbia residents save on hydrant fees and street light expenses. West Columbia has an ISO 3 rating, which is the lowest rating in Lexington County. The city is asking voters to check with their insurance writer to see how being a part of West Columbia can lower property insurance premiums. If the majority votes yes on April 14, 2015, the opportunity to annex into West Columbia and receive lower water rates, street light savings, and better fire protection will be lost forever. The City of West Columbia is asking voters to consider all of their options before making this important decision.
