The City of West Columbia will dedicate a new butterfly garden and playground to the memory of Council Member Abbott L. “Abby” Bray, Jr. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. The dedication ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. inside Carraway Park in honor of the well-known and loved teacher and coach at Brookland-Cayce High School. Abby Bray served on the West Columbia City Council as the councilman for District 4 from 2011 until he died in office on May 16, 2013. Although he served a short time on Council, he was instrumental in making the City of West Columbia the first city in the state to become an animal “no kill” city.
The City of West Columbia, with the assistance of staff from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, have planted beautiful flowers, such as Phlox, Lantana, Anise Hyssop, and Butterfly bushes, chosen specifically to attract butterflies. The City has also installed unique butterfly-themed children’s play equipment funded by a grant with the Lexington County Parks & Recreation Commission. Light refreshments will be served in the park gazebo after the dedication. Carraway Park is located at 212 Hudson Street in the Historic New Brookland Mill Village of West Columbia.
