WEST COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT HOSTS BASIC ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING

(West Columbia, S.C.) – Chief Dennis Tyndall is pleased to announce that the West Columbia Police Department is hosting a free active shooter training for agencies in the Columbia area.

Chief Tyndall States “On November 16th and 17th, the West Columbia Police Department will coordinate an active shooter response class with several surrounding jurisdictions here in the midlands. The officers that will be in attendance will receive the Basic Active Shooter Level I Certification from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) from Texas State University. More than 70,000 law enforcement officers across the nation have been trained in ALERRT operations and tactics to respond to active shooter situations. This vital training is delivered by veteran law enforcement personnel from Springdale PD, Columbia PD, and West Columbia PD. In March of 2013, the FBI announced that ALERRT is the national standard through which they are training their agents. Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Iowa, Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina are among the first states to train and adopt the ALERRT curriculum as their state standard in active shooter response. All of the equipment for the course was provided by State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at no charge. “

The following is a description of the class from ALERRT.org:
Course Description: This dynamic course of instruction is designed to prepare the first responder to isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter. The course curriculum includes weapon manipulation, threshold evaluation, concepts and principles of team movement (including solo officer strategies), setting up for room entry and room entry techniques, approach and breaching the crisis site, follow-on responder tactics, improvised explosive devices (IED’s), and post-engagement priorities of work. The course will culminate with dynamic “force-on-force” scenarios.
