West Columbia Targets Litter with $25,000 SCDHEC Solid Waste and Recycling Grant for Twin Bins

West Columbia, SC (March 28, 2019, at 10:29 AM) – The City of West Columbia received a $25,000 South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) Solid Waste and Recycling Grant to place 21 recycling and 21 trash receptacles (twin bins) in various public locations around the City. The targeted items are pedestrian trash and litter, as well as plastic bottles, cans, and glass.

Mayor Bobby Horton said, “The installation of the twin bins is another positive step in Council’s quest to reduce litter in public areas and beautify the City. We’ve strategically placed them in various high pedestrian traffic areas such as the Meeting Street/Highway 1 corridor, Triangle City, Butler Park, and Sunset Boulevard.”

The Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant Program is funded by a $2 fee on appliances and lead-acid batteries charged upon purchase at the retail level. The grant program funds general recycling or waste reduction projects.
