West Columbia’s Kinetic Derby Day, Racing, STEAM Festival, Market, Kids’ Zone, this Saturday, 10 AM – 3:30 PM

West Columbia, SC (April 21, 2022, at 11:55 AM) – On Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 10 AM – 3:30 PM, on State and Meeting Streets, West Columbia will be filled with art, soapbox racing, and an obstacle course with thousands of people gathering for West Columbia’s 3rd Annual Kinetic Derby Day. The event spurs creative thinking, competition, and family fun as teams come together to build unusual vehicles and awe-inspiring art installations.

Event Day Information

10 AM – 3:30 PM

  • Soap Box Racing (Break from 12 PM – 1 PM)
  • STEAM on STATE
  • Boys & Girls Club Kids’ Zone with Vintage Soap Box cars for exhibition racing for children
  • Meeting Street Artisan Market
  • Shopping in the local stores
  • Eat at the local restaurants and food trucks
  • Ferris Wheel on the corner of State and Meeting Streets

10 AM – 12 PM

  • Side-by-side soapbox/art car racing heats.

11:45 PM

  • Soap Box Racing GRUDGE MATCH with West Columbia and Cayce Police Department Chiefs. The winner has bragging rights and gets to keep the trophy until the next year.

12 PM

  • Track change to Obstacle Course – Ramps with obstacles of color, foam, water, and “COVID” grits.

12:15 – 12:45 PM

  • Awards Ceremony for side-by-side racing and GRUDGE MATCH on the stage next to the Meeting Street Artisan Market pavilion.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

  • The Columbia Children’s Theatre entertainment on stage beside the Meeting Street Artisan Market pavilion.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

  • Soap Box Obstacle Racing: Participants will test their builds and get dirty with the new obstacles and ramps. This is a single car, timed event.

2:15 PM – 2:45 PM

  • Goins Dancing performing on the stage.

3:15 PM – 3:30 PM

  • Awards Ceremony for obstacle racing on the stage next to the Meeting Street Artisan Market pavilion.

Road Closure Information

7 AM – 5:30 PM: Meeting Street – 9th Street, Leaphart Street Closed (See Attached Map)

7 AM – 7 PM: Meeting Street – Leaphart Street, Sunset Boulevard Closed (See Attached Map)

7 AM – 7 PM: State Street – Sunset Boulevard, Spring Street Closed (See Attached Map)

The temporary road closures are marked on the attached map. Meeting Street from 9th Street to S. Witt Street will be open to local traffic only. Center Street from Shuler to State Street will be open to local traffic only. Businesses in these areas may notify your customers that the officers will allow them through once they provide the destination. The Interactive Art Parking Lot located at 425 Meeting Street will be available for parking but will need to be entered from Center Street. All roads will be reopened as they are cleared.
