West Columbia’s Kinetic Derby Day Wants You to Show Your Grit

By March 2, 2018Headlines

West Columbia, SC (March 2, 2018) — It’s time to show us your grit! Kinetic Derby Day is Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 10 AM – 5 PM on Meeting and State Streets, in West Columbia. Register online now at kineticderbyday.com, for this fun-filled festival.

Kinetic Derby Day is the City of West Columbia’s unique tribute to wheels, sculptures, gears, and gravity. Build your own human-powered thingamajig or come cheer on the wacky and wonderful parade of whatchamacallits. Whether an elaborate gadget or a festooned bike–all contraptions are welcome. The event features an adult and kid soap box derby, artisan village, children’s area, live music, and food.

Kinetic sculptures are human-powered and do not contain motors. They can be as simple as someone in costume riding a bike or more elaborate structures like a flying pterodactyl. According to the City’s Event Manager Kelli Ricard, “We have very creative people in the area and want everyone to build a piece for the sculpture parade or soapbox derby. This is great for a family project or for a group of friends.”

Following the Kinetic Sculpture parade at 10:00 AM, soapbox derby races will be held on Meeting Street. Adults can compete as “Art Cars” or in the “Need For Speed” division. Children will have an area of their own to race, with several age brackets, to compete for the fastest time.

Registration is free for non-commercial entries through March 15th at KineticDerbyDay.com. There are also many opportunities for artists and food trucks to participate. For more information, please contact Events Manager Kelli Ricard at 803-939-8623 or kricard@westcolumbiasc.gov.
