Kinetic Derby Day Premiers First Kinetic Sculpture at Greater Cayce West Columbia Holiday Parade of Lights

West Columbia, SC (December 6, 2017 at 4:23 PM) – Since announcing the creation of a Kinetic Sculpture parade to be held on April 21, 2018, the City of West Columbia has been talking to civic groups and local businesses to create interest and draw Kinetic Derby Day Parade participants. To demonstrate what a kinetic sculpture is, the City has entered a kinetic sculpture into the Greater Cayce West Columbia Holiday Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 9th, 2017, at 5:30 PM. Look for “Christmas Pterodactyls,” featuring a flock of giant flying dinosaurs being chased by a T-Rex. “They are a cross between a dinosaur and a Dr. Seuss character”, says creator Rebecca Gosnell. “Our goal is to inspire other creative types to design something for the parade and see that it can be done with found objects, duct tape, and spray paint.”

Kinetic Sculptures are human-powered and do not contain motors. They can be as simple as someone in costume riding a bike or more elaborate structures like the flying pterodactyls. According to the City’s Event Coordinator Kelli Ricard, “We have very creative residents and business owners in West Columbia and want everyone to build a piece for the sculpture parade or soapbox derby. This is great for a family project or for a group of friends.”

The Derby Day also features soapbox racing. Following the Kinetic Sculpture parade at 10:00 AM, the highest point of Meeting Street will host soapbox derby racers in multiple categories. Adults can compete as “Art Cars” or in the “Need For Speed” division. Children will have an area of their own to race, with several age brackets, to compete for the fastest time.

Registration is available at KineticDerbyDay.com, and the cost for registration is $25-$35 for non-commercial entries. There are also many opportunities for artists and food trucks to participate.
